The Accountant LLC · UAE Tax & Compliance
Many business owners hand over their EmaraTax password and think they’re done. They’re not — and this single mistake can expose them to compliance failures, missed FTA notices, and penalties.
When you appoint a Tax Agent to manage your FTA affairs, there is a right way and a wrong way to give them access to your EmaraTax account. The right way is Grant Delegation. The wrong way — sharing your username and password directly — is far more common than it should be, and the risks are real.
Both approaches technically give your Tax Agent access. But only one of them is secure, compliant, and legally defensible if something goes wrong. At The Accountant LLC, we see this mistake regularly — and it is entirely avoidable.
What is grant delegation
The FTA’s official way to authorise a Tax Agent
EmaraTax — the FTA’s official tax management platform — includes a built-in delegation feature. Instead of handing over your credentials, you navigate to your account settings, search for your Tax Agent by their FTA registration number, and formally grant them access. The process is logged, auditable, and fully within the FTA’s compliance framework.
Your Tax Agent then operates under their own professional profile, not yours. Every action they take is traceable to them — not to you personally. This is how our team operates when handling VAT returns and FTA filings on behalf of clients across Dubai and the UAE.
Side-by-side comparison
Grant delegation vs. sharing access
✅ Grant Delegation ✔ Secure & officially approved by FTA ✔ Your credentials stay private ✔ Agent actions are separately logged ✔ Fully authorised representation ✔ Revocable at any time ✔ Protects your personal data | ❌ Sharing Your Login ✘ High risk of misuse ✘ Violates FTA account security rules ✘ Agent actions appear as yours ✘ You may miss FTA notifications ✘ Puts your entire account at risk ✘ May trigger compliance issues |
“When you share your login, every action your Tax Agent takes is recorded under your credentials. If something goes wrong, it’s on your record — not theirs.”
The common misconception
Hiring a Tax Agent does not end your responsibility
This is the most important thing a UAE business owner must understand: appointing a Tax Agent does not transfer your legal obligations to them. The FTA is explicit — you remain responsible for your tax compliance even after delegation. This applies equally to VAT obligations and Corporate Tax filings.
⚠️ Important reminder from the FTA: You are still responsible for following up on your obligations, keeping your contact details updated, monitoring FTA notifications, and responding to requests on time — even with a Tax Agent in place.
Think of it this way: a Tax Agent is your representative, not your replacement. Staying engaged is not optional — it is a legal requirement. If you are unsure what your ongoing obligations look like, our FAQ page covers the most common questions UAE business owners ask.

What to do and what to avoid
✅ Do ✔ Grant delegation through EmaraTax ✔ Respond to FTA requests on time ✔ Keep your email & mobile updated ✔ Follow up on your tax obligations ✔ Attend FTA awareness workshops ✔ Verify your Tax Agent on the FTA list | ❌ Don’t ✘ Share your username or password ✘ Allow others into your personal account ✘ Assume your responsibility has ended ✘ Miss FTA notifications or requests ✘ Let your agent update your contact info |
Step-by-step guide
How to set up grant delegation on EmaraTax
Log in to tax.gov.ae using your own EmaraTax credentials — never ask your agent to do this on your behalf.
Navigate to My Profile or Account Settings and select “Manage Tax Agents.”
Search for your Tax Agent using their FTA-registered Tax Agent number. Always verify this against the FTA’s official approved list first.
Review and confirm the delegation. Your Tax Agent will receive a notification to accept on their side.
Periodically review your active delegations and revoke access immediately for any agents you no longer engage.
💡 Pro tip from The Accountant LLC: Always confirm that your Tax Agent is on the FTA’s official registered list before granting any delegation. Working with an unregistered agent doesn’t protect you — you remain fully liable for any errors they make on your behalf. Our full bookkeeping and compliance service includes ongoing FTA account monitoring so nothing slips through.
Why it matters
The business risk of getting this wrong
Non-compliance with FTA processes — even unintentional — can result in administrative penalties. If your account is compromised because login details were shared, you have very limited recourse with the FTA, since account security is the taxpayer’s own responsibility.
This applies across all your tax obligations — whether you are managing quarterly VAT returns, meeting Corporate Tax deadlines, or handling day-to-day bookkeeping compliance. The FTA holds you accountable at every level.
Grant Delegation is not just best practice — it is the only method that genuinely protects your business in the event of a dispute, an audit, or a breakdown in your relationship with a Tax Agent. Stay compliant. Stay in control. And make sure the people representing you are doing so through the right channels.
